What are the top things to do in Big Sky?

Big Sky is an outdoor lover’s dream all year round. During winter, you’ll find world-class skiing and snowboarding. For those who don’t prefer riding down the slopes, there’s dogsledding, snowshoeing, and cozy fireside sessions. Once the snow melts, the landscape opens up to a host of summertime fun. This opens you to Big Sky’s other natural wonders, where you can enjoy hiking trails, mountain bike routes, fly fishing spots, and scenic chairlift rides with breathtaking views. You can also saddle up for a horseback ride, zip past the trees on a zipline, or play a round of golf on an award-winning course. Want a break from the outdoors? Local museums feature fascinating dinosaur exhibits for a dose of history and culture. Whether you’re the type to chase adrenaline or quiet mountain moments, Big Sky has something for everyone.

When is the best time to visit Big Sky?

That depends on what kind of adventure you’re after. The winter months (December to April) are the peak ski season. However, it’s agreed that January and February offer the freshest powder and best snow conditions. If you prefer hiking, fishing, or just soaking in the mountain scenery, the summer months (June to September) are ideal for your Big Sky visit, when the trails are much quieter and the weather’s perfect. April is a bit of a hidden gem, often called the “secret season”, with superb spring skiing and fewer crowds. Weather-wise, expect highs of around 71°F in July and lows of 4°F, so pack accordingly. A tip to those avoiding crowds: December can feel like a private winter wonderland. Enjoy!

How do I get to Big Sky?

Most travelers fly into Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN), which is around 45 miles north of Big Sky. This is roughly an hour’s drive down the scenic Highway 191. From there, you can rent a car (preferably four-wheel drive in the winter) or book a shuttle instead if you’d prefer skipping the drive. Once you’re in town, the free Skyline Bus makes it easy to get around, especially if you skipped renting a car. All in all, getting to Big Sky is pretty straightforward. Essentially, all you need to get there is to plan your trip based on your preferred season and means of travel.

What is the weather like in Big Sky?

Big Sky weather embodies the full range of the mountain climate throughout the seasons. Winters are cold and snowy, with daytime highs between 21-26°F and lows dipping to around 4-7°F from December to February. Expect a good amount of snow, with December alone avering nearly 8 inches of it. Summers are mild and sunny, with highs of around 71°F in July and cool nights in the 40s. Spring warms up gradually, with temperatures climbing from the 30s in March to the 50s by May, along with a bit more rain. The Fall starts crisp, with September highs near 60°F, then cools quickly into snowy November days around 31°F. It’s all part of the Big Sky charm, and it’s a must to include checking the weather forecast and packing smart when planning for that outdoor adventure.

Where should I stay in Big Sky?

It all depends on your vibe. If you’re there for hitting the slopes, Mountain Village puts you right there with ski-in/ski-out access. Meadow Village is a great pick for families since it’s close to shops and dining, with a more laid-back pace. The Canyon area is perfect if you’re into fishing or other river activities and enjoy that tucked-away mountain feel. Can’t decide what to go for between luxurious or practical accommodations? Moonlight Basin has you covered with choices ranging from high-end homes to budget-friendly hotels. Rest assured that whether you’re planning to choose a cozy cabin, a budget-friendly hotel, or a spacious vacation rental with a hot tub and room for the whole crew, many of them are managed by local companies who make sure everything runs smoothly.
