Big Sky sits halfway between Bozeman and West Yellowstone, tucked into the Montana mountains at the end of a canyon road. It feels wonderfully remote. It is not.
Big Sky is one of the most well-connected mountain destinations in the country, and the 2026/2027 season runs November 25, 2026 through April 11, 2027, with bonus weekends April 16 to 18 and 23 to 25. Whether you are road-tripping with the family, flying in for a long weekend, or booking a private driver, here is everything you need to get here and get around.
Flying to Big Sky
You fly into Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN), about an hour north of Big Sky Resort.
Big Sky Resort calls itself the most well-connected ski destination in the country, and the numbers hold up: direct flights from 19 cities and 21 airports, with up to 45 flights per day in peak season. Bozeman now offers more flights from the Northeast than any other ski destination.

Same-Day Skiing
This is the part people underestimate. Arrive by noon and you can be on snow the same afternoon coming from:
- New York, Washington DC, Boston, Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago
- Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City
- San Diego, Los Angeles, Seattle
Fly out in the morning, ride the lift in the afternoon. In a destination this remote-feeling, that is genuinely unusual.
What Is New at BZN
Bozeman's airport is growing fast. BZN handled 2,809,419 passengers in 2025, a 6.3% jump over the prior year and another record, and cleared nearly three million in the twelve months ending July 2026. It is one of the fastest-growing airports among the country's top 100.
Plan around the construction. BZN is in the middle of a $190 million multi-phase East Terminal Expansion, adding security checkpoints, gates, baggage claim capacity, and amenities. Good news long term. In the short term, give yourself extra time on departure day, especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings during ski season when the whole valley checks out at once. The main runway was also extended by 328 feet, with navigational aid upgrades continuing.
Getting From BZN to Big Sky
The drive is roughly 45 miles and about an hour south through the Gallatin River Canyon on US 191. It is one of the better airport transfers in American skiing: no bumper-to-bumper traffic, a river running alongside the whole way, and a real chance of spotting eagles, deer, elk, and bighorn sheep. Keep a camera reachable.
Read this before you plan anything else: rideshare apps do not work here. Uber and Lyft are not available in the Big Sky area. Do not land at BZN assuming you will summon a car. You have three options, and all three want to be arranged in advance.

Option 2: Rental Cars
For full flexibility to explore everything in and around Big Sky on your own schedule, book a rental car well in advance. A car opens up Montana's hot springs, Yellowstone National Park on your own terms, and every off-the-beaten-path detour in between.
Winter driving reality check. You do not strictly need four-wheel drive unless you are hitting 4x4 trails, but AWD plus snow tires or chains is the right call for safe winter travel here. The Gallatin Canyon is beautiful and it is also a two-lane mountain road that gets snow, ice, and wind. Reserve the AWD vehicle specifically rather than hoping for an upgrade at the counter, and dial 511 for Montana road conditions before you set out.

Getting Around Big Sky Once You Arrive
Skyline Bus and Big Sky Connect
Here is the thing most first-time visitors do not realize: you may not need a car at all.
Skyline runs zero-fare fixed-route service around Big Sky year-round, with stops including the Canyon, Meadow Village, Town Center, Mountain Village, and Moonlight Basin. On top of that, Big Sky Connect provides on-demand rides in the Meadow Village, Town Center, and Mountain Village areas, and the live bus tracker means you are not standing outside guessing when the next one arrives.

Parking at Big Sky Resort: What Changed for 2026/2027
If you have been here before, read this part. The parking shuttle system was reworked around the new Explorer Gondola.
- Shuttles no longer stop at the Lone Peak or Carpool lots. The Explorer Gondola is a short walk from both, and a signed ski corridor along the Whitewing run brings you back at the end of the day.
- Shuttles do serve Ramshorn, Levinski, Gallatin, Cinnamon, and Cedar lots, 8:30 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week.
- The Mountain Village drop-off zone now flows counterclockwise at the south end of the village, where paid parking, guest shuttles, and bus lanes converge.
- Paid parking sits next to the Exchange building in Mountain Village, priced per day with reservations required.
- All other lots are free but fill fast on weekends and holidays. There is a premium carpool lot for vehicles carrying three or more people, which is a good reason to consolidate your group.
Check the resort's current season info for parking maps before you drive up.
Local Taxis
Several private transportation companies and on-call taxis operate around Big Sky for dinner reservations and evenings out. Again: no Uber, no Lyft. Program a number into your phone before you need it at 9 PM on a Saturday.
Do You Actually Need a Car in Big Sky?
A quick decision guide:
- Skip the car if you are staying ski-in ski-out, plan to ski most days, and are happy eating on the mountain or in Town Center. Shuttle in from BZN, ride Skyline locally, save on parking and gas.
- Rent a car if you want Yellowstone on your own schedule, hot springs day trips, grocery runs at odd hours, or you are traveling with small kids and a lot of stuff.
- Book a private transfer if you are arriving late, traveling with a large group, or simply do not want to drive a canyon road in the dark after a travel day. Worth every dollar on arrival night.
