In Big Sky, there are so many waterways to fish that it can be hard to find the perfect spot for your next trip. So, we teamed up with Gallatin River Guides to bring you the current fishing report in Big Sky, Montana for the summer.
There are several ways to count the population of fish which helps to understand the fishing conditions. For example, you can set up a fish ladder to manually count every fish as they pass through. You could use a counting fence to count the fish in that restricted region. Or, you could try electro-fishing where a section of the river is electrically shocked, then the fish are temporarily stunned long enough to count once they float to the top, where they can be counted. Instead of making you research things like population dynamics, probability sampling, abundance density distribution, and genetic data, we talked to Hunter McPhillips to get the latest run-down on Big Sky’s fishing report.
Instead of relying on numbers and equations for how many fish are in the water, fishing reports focus on the prospects of catching fish and give advice on how to make your catch. When you’re here in Big Sky, don’t worry about how deep the trout are, what they’re eating, and whether or not they’ll like your bait because we’re saving you that trouble.
The likelihood of catching fish in a river can depend on many things. What predators are in the area and how many? What are the dynamics of the river? How long, wide, and fast is it? Is the river heavily fished? Knowing how many fish are in the river is not going to help us catch more fish. A fishing report will help, but it must come from a trusted source that knows the waterways well and fishes them often.

Gallatin River
The Gallatin River has bumped up and turned brown, making for a great fishing option. Targeting water from the bank and fishing the first 1-2 feet off the river’s bank will be key. Fly selection will be easy as bugs release in the high water. Rubber legs, prince nymphs, and worm patterns will be your best bet.
Madison River
The Upper Madison River is starting to rise which should put fish back in easy holding water where the water will be clearer above the West fork. Check the Upper Madison flowcharts to see any plugs of mud heading down low. Stonefly and caddis patterns are the go-to and small streamers near the banks could move some bigger fish.

The iconic peak of Lone Mountain towers above Big Sky at an elevation 11,166 ft with a vertical drop of 4,350 ft to the base area. The Big Sky Artists Collective is a community of visual artists located in Big Sky and was created out of the group of artists that participated in the First Annual Big Sky Open Studio Tour in December of 2019. That initial event motivated the artists to work as a group to promote local artists.

Maria S Westlandis inspired by her love and affinity for the countryside and she creates her artwork using oil on canvas or board to share the beauty of creation, the blessings and intensity of the life she experiences in nature.
Maggie Shane is an artist and life-long creative soul. Painting has become her passion, a place to reflect, relax and release the inner artist. She utilizes a water-based medium on canvas and paper to produce representational landscapes and florals.
Heather Rapp is a local Big Sky artist who paints abstract landscapes and wildlife. Her style is attributed to the roughness of a palette knife, the use of a spray bottle in dripping & layering vibrant saturated colors, and mixed media & mark making.
Jake Mosher is a full-time nature photographer living in Bozeman, MT. His work has appeared across the globe and he believes that in nature nothing is ordinary. “The world,” he says, “particularly off the beaten path, is still a wonderful thing to see.”
Annie McCoy is a home-grown Appalachian mountain girl who relishes her time in the wild. She considers herself a traditional plain air artist but not an alla prima painter. She prefers to return day after day to the same location, sometimes taking weeks to complete a painting.
Michelle Kristula-Green creates contemporary mosaics that capture the beauty, austerity and ruggedness of the natural world, using hand cut stone, flint, marble and Italian smalti. Many of her pieces focus on the Yellowstone ecosystem and the wildlife within it.
Kim Eggemeyer paints to capture the play of light and shadow, the reaction of color against color, the beauty of form, and to simplify nature’s complexities. Recording her emotional response to fleeting moments can be elusive, but is an endless source of inspiration and pleasure.
Paul Brourman toggles between his studios in both Evanston, IL and Big Sky, Montana. He draws immense joy pursuing storytelling through the medium of oils in settings such as these. His subjects include portraiture, landscapes, western narratives and abstract works.
Patty Bauchman moved to Big Sky to be surrounded by amazing wildlife and natural beauty. Her main goal with wildlife photography is to observe and catch animal behavior without her presence affecting their actions and to capture a moment that tells a story.
Paul Barmore was fortunate to be mentored by a successful Montana bronze-casting artist as a young welder, which helped solidify his ambition of combining art and welding. From fly-fishing the Gallatin river as a child, to exploring new mountaintops as an adult, he creates art with nature and Montana-inspired themes that any outdoor enthusiast will relate to.
Carol Barmore has been a Montana artist for 32 years. Her love of the outdoors and animals is translated onto the canvas. Carol’s sensitivity to color relationships and love of impressionism has given her paintings a unique style.
Georgia Baker enjoys being outdoors, plein aire painting which creates in her a state of awe. Habitat loss can be devastating for species that are already endangered, but it is a serious threat for countless others as well. She hopes that her work inspires others to help preserve and restore our wild spaces for future generations.

For more than a decade, Music in the Mountains has been Montana’s finest free outdoor concert series hosted by the Arts Council of Big Sky, featuring the best up-and-coming touring musicians in the country as well as established, well-known artists. On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, Trampled by Turtles, American bluegrass-influenced folk band from Duluth, Minnesota will be making their debut at the Big Sky Events Arena for a concert under Lone Mountain. General admission tickets are first come, first serve floor or seated bleacher access. Food and beverage available to purchase on site. Restrooms available on site. Children ages 2 and under accompanied by an adult ticketholder do not need a ticket and their entry is free. Gates open at 5:00 p.m.
Presented by Yellowstone Club, the Big Sky Rodeo features some of Montana State University’s finest up-and-coming rodeo athletes as they entertain with a variety of rodeo disciplines including Bareback Riding, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Tie-Down Roping, Breakaway Roping, Barrel Racing and Bull Riding.
Mutton bustin’ and an additional special feature of 406 Rodeo miniature bucking stock ridden by junior roughstock kids will highlight the evening. Professional PBR and Western sports announcer Matt West will be announcing the event.
Ticket holders can enjoy food and drink options at the venue including food trucks and bar service.

The Tony Marques Band (TMB) (pronounced: “Mar-cus”) ranks at the top when it comes to Las Vegas’s premier country/rock bands. The attention this four-piece band has received came rather quickly since being established in early 2013. The incredible musicianship, smooth three-part harmonies, and energetic, audience-interactive shows have people talking, venues calling, and crowds wanting more. These key ingredients come together to create the perfect blend of today’s country/rock music.
Heading up the band, Tony Marques has been deeply rooted in the country music scene since he started performing over twenty-five years ago. Without question, his rich tenor vocals lend themselves to the country genre perfectly.
Tony has opened for some of today’s biggest country stars including Big & Rich, Toby Keith, Jason Aldean, Billy Currington, Gary Allan, Charlie Daniels, and Diamond Rio, just to name a few. Fellow band members Tommy Cameron (Lead Guitar & Vocals), Mike Tucker (Drums, Percussion & Vocals), and Mike Riojas (Bass & Vocals), come from diverse musical backgrounds consisting of country, rock, pop, and R&B. This adds the edge you hear in the band’s live shows.
This year’s Community Day & Mutton Bustin’ will include an array of family-friendly activities including a petting zoo, carnival games and prizes, food trucks, and sheep riding through the arena for the highest score. We will have spots available starting March 4th.
MUTTON BUSTIN’
Mutton Bustin will include three rounds of 10 participants based on a first come first served reservation basis. Buckaroos must be 3-6 years old, weigh less than 60lbs. Reservations are now open.
BINGO! Everyone is familiar with the rush of adrenaline when you’re the first to get a row of perfectly inked stamps on your BINGO card. Join us for the 4th Annual Dick Allgood Community BINGO Night benefiting a local nonprofit. Big Sky PBR has grown into “Big Sky’s Biggest Week” – a week of community events including three nights of action-packed Touring Pro Division PBR bull riding, fundraisers, vendor village, and more. The Big Sky Biggie is one heck of a mountain bike race in the heart of Big Sky, Montana! Choose from three distances – 60 miles, 30 miles, 15 miles. Starting in Big Sky’s Town Center and climbing into the beautifully distracting views from Lone Peak and Buck Ridge, riders will connect on some of the area’s most exhilarating (and challenging) pieces of single-track, double-track, gravel roads and the occasional paved segment. This is a true community event celebrating the joy of riding mountain bikes at any skill level. Proceeds benefit the Big Sky Community Organization and SWMMBA Big Sky Chapter.

The Rut is a three-day mountain running festival bringing together athletes from all over the world. Designed to test all athletes, these races include several different courses – Vertical Challenge (VK), 11k, 20K, 28k, and 50k – all on the majestic Lone Mountain.
Due to tram construction, courses will not cover the summit of Lone Peak. Please check specific distance routes for more information.

National Parks Free Entrance Days 2022
All National Parks that charge entrance offer FREE admission on select dates throughout the year. The summer opening date for the West Entrance to Yellowstone is April 15th, 2022, and April 16th marks the first day of the presidentially proclaimed National Park Week!
If spring is too soon, you can enjoy the park later in the year as admission to Yellowstone is also free on August 4th (Anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act), September 24th (National Public Lands Day), and later in the fall season on November 11th, 2022 (Veterans Day).

Kids Lift Tickets
Kid’s ski for a dollar a day at Big Sky Resort! What a bonus for a family ski vacation! Be sure to book your tickets in advance online and note that lift tickets are not included in kids lessons and clinics at Mountain Sports Ski School.
Beginner Tickets
Big Sky Resort offers Beginner Tickets to access the magic carpet and Explorer lift at Mountain Village and the magic carpet and Derringer lift at the Madison Base area. The perfect option for first-timers on the slopes of Big Ski Resort. Beginner Tickets are available at ticket windows only and are not available in the early season.
Single Day Tickets
If you’re in town for a weekend and only skiing one day, single day lift tickets are available with prices ranging from $69 to $250. Depending on availability, discounted half-day lift tickets are available for same-day purchase from 12 PM at the ticket window, for lift access from 1 PM to 4 PM.
Multi-Day Tickets
The best option for Big Sky lift tickets is a multi-day pass, with options ranging from 2 out of 3 days to 7 out of 9 days. The more days you book, the more savings you receive! Reserve your dates online to ensure you don’t miss out!

If you’re seeking professional instruction, or unsure of negotiating Big Sky’s vast terrain alone, the Mountain Sports Ski School is your ticket to conquering the slopes with confidence. The Mountain Sports Ski School offers a wide range of options for ages 3 and up, including private instruction and group lessons, multi-day camps and clinics, kids lessons and camps, adaptive programs, early and late season headlamp night skiing, and experienced tram guides to explore the advanced terrain on Big Sky’s iconic Lone Peak.
Don’t let the little ones stop you from experiencing the best of Big Sky! The Lone Peak Playhouse offers parents a worry-free experience with flexible options for morning, afternoon, or full-day childcare daily for children six months to 8 years. The playhouse has two convenient locations in Mountain Village and in the Madison Base area with indoor and outdoor play spaces, nap rooms for infants and toddlers, and a seamless connection to the Mountain Sports Ski School to set your kids up with lessons and camps.

Parking at Big Sky Resort
Paid parking is available next to the Exchange building in Mountain Village, pricing starts at $52/day and reservations are required. All other Big Sky parking is free but can fill up fast, especially on holidays and weekends. There are free parking lots at the Madison Base area and in Mountain Village including a premium lot for carpool drivers (3+ drivers). From 8 AM to 6 PM, open-air shuttles run in constant rotation from the Mountain Village parking lots to the Exchange building at the base area. For carbon footprint conscious travelers, the Skyline Bus offers a seasonal service between Big Sky and Bozeman, and a daily service throughout Big Sky seven days a week from November 20, 2023 to April 14, 2024.
